Network Management Systems, also known as NMS, are a set of hardware and software tools that enable IT personnel to oversee the different components of a network. IT network management systems are comprised of different functions that ensure that your business’ network runs smoothly. The ultimate goal of NMS is to minimise any network interference and make the system work as efficiently as possible. We will run through the different processes that contribute to the effectiveness of an NMS structure.

IT network management process is broken down into four functions.

  1. Configuration Management

Configuration management is basically an organisation and management of all the network’s components. It is here that a database is made where locations and network addresses of all hardware devices and all the programs information, such as versions and updates. Using this database, IT personnel can refer to should the network need to be modified, repaired, or upgraded. Network configuration does not only happen in the beginning of the NMS setup. It’s actually routinely conducted in order to improve performance and solve any problems that might come up.

  1. Fault Management

Fault management is the process of determining any issues that might be affecting your network. It is done by detecting the issue, isolating it, and fixing any malfunctions that might occur. Its aim is to prevent and minimise any downtimes in the network. This also allows IT management personnel to get ahead of an issue before it becomes an even bigger problem.

  1. Performance Management

The performance management function is the process where it goes through any performance issues that might occur. Performance issues such as user response time, network throughput, and line utilisation. Issues in these areas are better solved or at least optimised to its maximum potential. Network administrators can see all of these in visual charts and compare them with previous results. If there is decline of performance, then they can reconfigure something in the network.

  1. Security Management

When working with confidential information, network security should be one of the priorities. Threats in network security can cost companies a lot of money. Firewalls and antivirus programs can help curb these threats.

All of these functions will contribute to a detailed report. This allows IT personnel to offer concrete recommendations to improve the current network management system. The IT management process might very technical but it will ultimately save you a lot of money in the long run.
