Belly dance is a type of torso-driven dance, which movements’ stresses on using hips. It is a kind of dance, which concentrates on torso muscles’ natural confinement, while the movements are executed in relaxing way. These characteristics of belly dance makes it unique compared to other Western dance that steps are usually involve moving of the limbs.

Belly dance is sometimes compared to jazz ballet because there are isolations of belly dance that seems similar to jazz ballet. However, the two dances have different emphasis, different feeling, and differently driven. Unlike other kinds of dance, most movements used in belly dance have no unified naming scheme. Fluid movements

Winding, twisting, and flowing movements that are executed in continuous motion. Aside from this, fluid movements are also performed in a rhythmic approach. The movements are harmonized to convey intricate instrumental improvisations that need a lot of abdominal muscle control while doing it. The most common fluid movements are the vertical and horizontal figures of 8 or moving hips in an infinity loops way. Other movements include undulation of abdomen and hips, and tilting or horizontal hip circles. To come up with varieties of textured and complex movements, the movements can be combined, embellished, and varied.

Shivers, vibrations, and shimmies

The movements for this category are done using the ribcage or hips. To create depth and texture, these movements must be executed in fast, small, and continuous actions.  Shimmies are usually use to interpret roll on an instrument called riq or tablah. It has several types that vary in size and process of generation, and usually covered over other movements. Bouncing earthquake shimmies, straight-legged knee-driven shimmies, relaxed shoulder or ribcage shimmies, twisting hip shimmies, up and down shimmies, and tiny hip vibrations are some common types of shimmies in belly dance Singapore.

Percussive movements

Staccato movements are used to accent the music or beat, which usually executed using hips. Outwards hip hits, vertical hip rocks, hip drops, hip twists, and hip lifts are the common movements for this category. Other parts of the body including shoulder accents and ribcage are dropped or lifted to execute percussive movements while doing belly dancing lessons.
